How close can I plant to an air conditioner unit or stand up propane tank?

I want to plant some shrubs to hide my utilities, is there such a thing as too close?

1. The propane tank well i'd get some pavers and pave about half a meter either side of the tank and pave an access path then put your shrubs etc in. with the air conditioner if it is one of the ones that drip the water then maybe put some ferns in there even a birdsnest fern under where it's dripping the water, but there has to be some shade for ferns cause they are rain forest plants. good luck
2. If it's a central air unit, keep plants at least 2ft away, or they will cut off vents, and plug up coils. Better to put up a fence around it, but remember to hinge one side of it so you can get into it.
