Reality TV shows - What is the attraction to spending time watching shows of other people's lives?

Shows like The Hills, Jersey Shore, etc to me are a huge waste of time. It is about 5 minutes of mundane jargon and trash-talking followed by 20 minutes of city shots while music plays in the background. Are people that bored (or that uninspired) with their own lives that they resort to watching these twits on TV? Bonus: People of Italian heritage, what do you think of being represented in the media by the cast of Jersey Shore?
