What are some good Broadway shows that men would enjoy?
Hi. I want to take my traditional, old fashioned, nice father to a Broadway show when he visits NY. Can you suggest anything? Thanks in advance!

- Wicked is always a safe bet.
- Spamalot if he's a Monty Python Fan. Phantom of the Opera is always a hit with "old fashioned," and it's not just a cheezy love story for women. But if they have Spamalot running, that is a spectacle extravaganza that people usually enjoy. Just avoid Mamma Mia for a night out with Dad since that show is more for a night out with Mom.
- I would take him to see Jersey Boys, Next To Normal, The Lion King, Fela!, Fences, God of Carnage, A Little Night Music, The Phantom of the Opera, La Cage Au Folles. These seem more mature. I've seen theion King and Fela. They're both awesome. When I walk by Jersey Boys I can't walk by due to all the people. Next To Normal got good reviews. Heard the music and I like it. Fences I took a pic with Russell Hornsby as I was walking by. The Phantom is the longest running show on B- way and who doesn't like Angela Lansberry.
- Here I sit with my "New York Times" Broadway listings in front of me. My suggestions would be "South Pacific" (wonderful, old-fashioned musical with a score everyone knows), "Chicago" (most people know the music, and the dancing is incredible), "Jersey Boys" (great '60s music, but tough to get tickets). I'd also recommend the review "Sondheim on Sondheim", and the show that features the fabulous Angela Lansbury--"A Little Night Music".
- It depends on what your dad is looking for in a show. Jersey Boys is the safest bet for middle aged male audience members right now. If you want a traditional musical theater production, A Little Night Music would be best for a middle aged man. The Lion King is a little bit kid oriented and Fela is not good for an old fashioned man. Fences is a fantastic play, as is God of Carnage (but it's closing soon so it would depend when he's in town). Wicked is geared more toward women. The Addams Family is funny and has celebrities, it's a fun night. South Pacific is beautiful and classic and Lend Me a Tenor (a play) is hilarious. So, my top recommendations would be: Musical - Jersey Boys Play - Lend Me a Tenor
- My #1 recomendation would be Phantom of the Opera. It is the classic take-your-breath-away show Wicked is also amazing! If you want a fun 80s show; Rock of Ages would be great. If your father is a 60s man, Hair has gotten rave reviews
- JERSEY BOYS hands down. It is my father's favorite. He likes musicals, but my boyfriend (who does not) ALSO loved Jersey Boys.
- Unless he is brain dead with an IQ under 86.. STAY AWAY FROM WICKED.. Since you didn't SAY when you would visit N.Y (not surprising since nobody ever bothers to give PERTINENT INFORMATION) then the best I can suggest is for you to contact the TIMES SQUARE CONCIERGE AND TICKET CENTER.. it's located right in Times Square and they offer an entire range of services, from theater tickets to helping you find a hotel or a restaurant.
