How do i make a number one shaped b-day cake stand up?
I plan to make mini square cakes in shape of baby blocks so those could help support the main number one shaped cake. It's a first b-day cake.

- First of all, if you've never made a birthday cake before, i suggest that you do at least one trial run before you go all the way to the day to have it ready and it flops in your face. You always have to practice. I've never done a standing birthday cake, but I have a question for you. Are you going to do just a straight up and down one, or are you going to have the little thing at the top that comes off the left as seen here---->1. I'm not sure how to accomplish that without it falling off, but you definately need some dowels from michaels or hobby lobby in their cake departments. The dowels will keep them from sliding, etc. Good luck to you and I hope it turns out well. But look, if all else fails, just make it laying down and it will be just as beautiful!
- Oh how sweet! Great idea but.. The blocks shaped cakes for the base is perfect, but I can't figure out how to support the serif at the top (the little "balancing" edges on like typewriter lettering) Hmm... maybe you could do blocks, or a car or train? I used to have the cutest 50's kids cake decorating book, such adorable ideas.
- Lots of cakes that are upright have dowels put into them to help support them. You could also make it out of rice krispie treats and then mold them into the number. Those stand up well on their own and can be frosted.
- Hi AliO! Sound like a great idea you have for the cake. I would suggest you use the bamboo skewers that are used for kabobs. They are about a buck a pack of ten at any supermarket in the baking aisle. They are thin and rigid and will support many times it's own weight. They can be cut to size with scissors, wire cutters, or even a shape knife.. They also are non toxic and eco friendly when disposed of. Have fun and good luck!
