Is it possible to build an Aquarium stand out of Cinder Blocks and Plywood?
I have a 40 gallon aquarium and had it on a sturdy desk(or so I thought) and today the desk buckled and was causing my tank to be un-level. I moved my tank to the floor because I don't have a tank stand. I was wondering if you could make one out of cinder blocks, plywood and 2x4's? Has anyone ever made one and how did it turn out? I do not want my tank to stay on the floor and flatten the carpet permanently. Thanks to all that contribute.

- I've seen a lot of fish stores set up with blocks and wood. As long as you have a level and sturdy flat surface at least a smidgen bigger than the tank the rest is aesthetics. If you have enough 2 by 4's and a miter box you could make a stand. Even without the mitering you could sit down and draw out a design for a stand.
- I've seen fish tanks on cinder blocks covered in fabric. Cinder blocks are rather unattractive, but the fabric covered it up and made it look nice. They would do a good enough job that you don't need to bother with the plywood and 2x4s, but there are instructions online if you want: http://www.tcmas.org/forums/showthread.php?t=18166
- I've used cinder blocks and plywood and 2x4 which worked well you just have to secure it that it won't shift and move.
- yes you can do that as long as you choose the correct size and type of wood. dont get particle board, compressed wood, or softwood like pine. use harder woods. make sure that the wood is larger than the base of the aquarium and i would do a double layer to be safe
- go here they got a diy section with all kinds of different stands be built with different levels of knowledge some easy to more complex http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/ . i used 2x4 for my breeder tanks and for my 75 gallon i used skids like the one used for shipping, used the wood off of them to build on and when people see it they dont believe me think its store brought
