What is it called when you have a word and each letter in the word stands for another word?

Like if you have the name Scott and "S" stands for strong "C" stands for courageous and so on.

  1. An acrostic poem if you're referring to a name. An acronym/mnemonic is you're referring to a word.
  2. Maybe you're thinking of the word "acronym." An acronym is "a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words." For example, ASAP is an acronym for "as soon as possible."
  3. It's an ACROSTIC - and it doesn't have to be a poem. It's certainly not an acronym, which means the opposite meaning. e.g. sad is an acronym for happy
  4. Acronym takes the first letter of each word and makes another word out of it. The other answer means to say that sad is the ANTONYM of happy (= opposite).
