  1. They should be studying metaphysics. Which then would mean they are studying materialism, or idealism. I guess?
  2. Well.... If we wanted to play with semantics we could give a few answers. One possibility is that they can study anything even though they are incapable of distinguishing a thing from the properties it exhibits. What does being able to distinguish a thing from its properties have to do with being able to study it? Not being able to do so doesn't prohibit them from studying it... just from perhaps having an enlightened understanding of it. If the intent of the question is "what should be studied by those who are incapable of distinguishing a thing from the properties it exhibits?" Then a reasonable answer would be that they should study things which don't necessarily require an ability to distinguish between the thing and it properties in order to be understood.
