What is the best material to fill speaker stands with at a reasonable cost besides Sand and Lead shot?

I currently have them filled with sand ideally this should add mass to prevent the speaker stands from resonating and interfering with the soud coming from the speaker to add the material im after must be very heavy and readily avialable , so that children cant knock them over, the rice was interesting though!! isnt concrete a moderately lightweight material though?

  1. concrete from a bag
  2. Plain simple rice...stored inside a plastic bag.
  3. Concrete
  4. Not sure why you don't want to use sand, it will be far better than concrete. the only things that are better are lead shot (as you mentioned) or bismuth or tungsten shot but those might be more difficult to find. Sand is by far about the best there is. the damping of sand is astronomical because it is unconsolidated (unlike concrete). That is why bags of it are used to build bullet resistant bunkers and backstops, it absorbs kinetic energy and turns it into heat very effectively. It is also easy to remove and replace if and when you have to move the stands. I've used sand filled cavities in steel weldments that had to be fabricated to replace worn or broken cast iron housings for high precision machine tools and it works very well to damp out vibrations. If you are concerned about the sand dumping out, put it into a plastic bag and seal it first, or pour a layer of plaster of paris on top of it to hold it in.
