do i really need speaker stands for my bose home theater system?

im getting a 2.1 bose home theater system soon and was wondering do i really need speaker stands or can i just put the two speakers on top of my tv stand on the right and left side of my tv? i don't mind buying stands but it seems like there not really necessary. what do you think? are they necessary?

1. No, speaker stands are not necessary. Speaking of "not necessary", I encourage you to shop around a bit before you buy any "home theater" system made by Bose. Their speakers are sub-par and overpriced.
