How many exhibits are there in the Smithsonian museums?

I want to know the total exhibits of the Smithsonian.

1. I doubt that there is a single number because it depends upon what you mean by an "exhibit". Are you talking about a single item on display? Or a grouping of items? Or a collection of displays in a single gallery that are all on one topic? There are millions of items owned by the Smithsonian, only a small portion of which are on display at a given time. They are housed in more than a dozen museums in Washington, DC, plus one in suburban Virginia and one in New York.
2. There are 19 museums, 8 research facilities. Millions of exhibits. And I do not believe the curators would know, because more are being added by the day. This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America. Please pick an answer as the best answer, even if it is not mine.
