Do you need a cake stand?

I found a cake stand that I like but my guy can't rap his head around why one is needed. If you don't have one what does the bakery do with the cake? Do they just put the cardboard base on the table? Thanks.

1. usually it's put right on the table
2. The bakery might charge a deposit for a stand & when its returned, the deposit is refunded.
3. check with the bakery first then go from there

We are not having to get a cake stand thats why we pay good money for a good baker and caterer to provide it (check with yours) alot of times its on something and you don't see it because you may have fresh flowers around the bottom or some other decoration florist even ask if you need cake flowers usually
