Are pocket screws strong enough for an aquarium stand?

I'm planning on building an aquarium stand which will hold 55g of water. Are pocket screws strong enough for this? This is going to be my structure (http://freshwatercichlids.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/diy-aquarium-stand-300x252.jpg) or is screwed butt joint better?

1. you are looking at 440 lbs. of water...if it were me i would do a half lap joint glued and screwed...
2. The stand in the diagram should be strong enough. Be sure to glue all of the joints as you build the stand.
