What are some negative effects reality tv shows have on youth?

i think these show are very influential toward young teens I have negative feelings towards the reality show phenomenon. (sex, partying, sex and obscene behavior are glorified) without showing the negative side effects these action can have on a person's life. How do you feel about the reality phenomenon? What do you think would be a good solution? (if there is any)

  1. flavor of love and for real girls
  2. some people talk about the shows they get to watch and it makes more protected people feel pressured to watch the same thing. im not sure if there is a solution and its just the parents fault
  3. Well, I think they give a false image of reality, since the people watching them are under the impression that everything happening in the show is real. In fact, most reality TV shows are scripted, or at least heavily edited. For example, watching the reality show Survivor makes you really feel like these people are out there, fighting to survive, when really they're surrounded by cameras and so on. And they only show the bits on TV that the director wants you to see. So, consequently, youth get a false image of reality.
  4. Most of these "reality" shows that "vote" someone off at the end could give kids a complex about failure. They might subconsciusly feel that there is no second chance to a failure in school or at work. It also teaches a viscousness and ruthlessness that isn't really necessary in the work world. Business has been moving towards team work for the past few decades, and these shows teach an "every man for himself" attitude that can damage a child's world view.
  5. I dont think TV and movies has anything to do with influencing children. Its the childs own decision to act stupid and the parents fault for lacking parenting skills.
  6. Well for starters, the ones teens are attracted to are termed "reality", but they are really "staged reality". The things that go on are staged and don't really every happen like that in real life. The problem is that while it is easy for youth to distinguish the difference in reality and the way a reasonable person would react from the way characters in a story act/react (such as in sitcoms), the line gets blurry when the stated premise is that the show is completely real. I personally hate the current version of reality TV (if you don't group sports and game shows within that same genre). They are unimaginative, and as time goes on the concepts get more and more boring. Survivor, American Idol - then we get celebrity Survivor, then a few years later its Wife Swap and Biggest Loser. Here's a great idea, lets get people to sit on their fat asses (and I feel justified in saying that, we've got an obesity problem in this country) and watch other people lose weight. Can TV be more boring? Solutions? Better scripted TV shows with better performers? Most "actors" are terrible. They make millions of dollars poorly performing poorly written parts (the first one who comes to mind is Angelina Jolie, she is nearly incapable of selling a character on camera), while well acted parts get no recognition if they don't sell at the box office. We need to quit accepting garbage, and maybe the folks selling it will quit producing it. There's no easy answer to this. The trend for the last 20 years or more in this country has been to look for the easy way out, instant gratification for the least amount of effort. Until we can get rid of that attitude, mindless crap will continue to bombard us and our children.
  7. Good question. I would say that all dont know that these shows are scripted or captured from angles or edited in such a way that a mountain is formed out of a mole hill. Even i wasnt aware of this fact as a teenager and i used to like celebrities for what they showed on screen. Kids start sympathizing for their elimination. they sit online to vote several times or pick up their parent's mobiles hideously and vote for their favorite contestants. [ ya i have seen my lil nephew doing that] . Television and internet consume the time that they would spend in making their career and study. i heard the celebrities wake up early put on the make up and later they are shown to wake up on screen. Kids get inferiority complex or feel insecure when they see people waking up so beautifully. They exclaim that they look ugly even after putting make up. Hence they go for cosmetic treatments and waste money and this can be hazardous : Michael Jackson isnt a bad example there. Depression and suicide have become a rising trend. The celebrities are idealised by them and when they are shown partying, smoking, drinking, using abusive language, teens copy them to look cool or they get the notion that this is part of living a fabulous or celebrity life. sex and obscenity ofcouse are under spotlight all the time. Young minds have taken it as just a pleasure filled activity. Solution::::::::::: Well in India they have a censor board that checks the shows before they are put on the family channels. May be u will be surprised that here a show like big brother had no sex scene and once a model just wore bikini in it and it was telecasted, even that was questioned in news. so we hope even this much wont happen next time. Parents should keep an eye on them. Porn sites and adult channels should not be working in their places: thats possible ! Sex is a union of two souls. Family values should be taught so that the teens respect the way they come to world and they avoid vulgarity themselves when a picture of their family comes to their mind. religion or moral values can help them. The last para is best because its the individual who can stop himself better.
  8. I think the negative effects are that they are teaching that if you lie and cheat and stab people in the back, you will get a prize. You can take shortcuts and you don't have to work hard to get what you deserve. They exploit mentally ill people just for ratings, and allow contestants that are mentally unbalanced to threaten other contestants just for ratings. They glorify irresponsible behavior, so kids these days are learning to admire inappropriate behavior in order to win a cash prize. I think a good solution would be to stop these shows, and for people to just not watch them.
