Where can you purchase the used retail store displays when they are done with them?

I know that most retail stores throw out their old displays once they are done with them. However some of them would make great interior design pieces. Where can you get them? Is there an online forum or do you just have to ask a store if you can have it when they are done? Thanks!

  1. You answered your own question. They throw them out most times so just go around back and do a little dumpster diving. I've been in the metal scrap business for years and have been in more dumpsters than you can imagine and most department store dumpsters, if you can get to them are fairly clean meaning little 'wet garbage' and usually cardboard etc. Short of going that step just ask the store manager if you can have it when it's ready to be thrown out. Be prepared to show up with a pickup truck because most of those displays won't fit in a car and have some help with strong backs with you too because it's very unlikely the store is going to pay one of their employees to waste their time to load trash in your vehicle. In other words, DIY (do it yourself) That doesn't mean it's trash because one mans trash is another's treasure. I have sold quite a few displays as scrap so also be aware many are not light at all except the occasional cardboard displays. A lot of them are wood or steel and often connected to a bunch of other junk as well. By the way, i agree, a lot of displays make great decorator items. i have quite a few myself. And oh yeah, hang out near metal scrap yards. Sometimes those guys or gals will know just where to look to find the stuff you're looking for and a lot of times they will go get them for you for a small fee. They usually ain't getting rich selling scrap metal.
