What can I use for a potting medium for aquarium plants?
I have them at present in ritch garden dirt and they grow like mad, however any amount of watter agitaton muddies up the aquarium. What I need is something that will stand the watter being stirred up without dirtying the aquarium. Any help apreciated. Perhaps I was unclear in my question what I am doing is propigating aquarium plants in a seperate tank rooted in soil and have none in my fish tanks. Thanks everyone!

- Eco-Complete is one of the best soils in the fish hobby. Flourite as well, but is a bit dirty, even after a long washing and filtering a little stirr might make a dust cloud. Laterite is not a substrate but a bottom layer to help plant growth. Also when stirred creates the red cloud of dirt.
- theres a substrate for plants you can get and mix it with gravle and it is in the Dr. foster and smith magazine. theres a bunch of colors and different types..i dont think you should use dirt in your tank...it could make them very sick. good luck!
- If you're simply growing plants in a separate fishless tank, is there a major problem with stirring up the substrate ? You could always lay some normal gravel on top of the soil, this prevents the entire top surface from being churned whenever you do any activity. Or use a flocculent solution to clump the solid particles together & restore water clarity faster. You could switch to something like Flourite that doesn't contribute to water murkiness once you have thoroughly rinsed it at the initial use.
