  1. i would make any kind cake you want, and use the dowels for support.
  2. Just make the cake from a cake mix. I've done wedding cakes and used cake mixes. They stack fine.
  3. Try Hot Milk Sponge, it tends to hold up a lot better than other types of cake, and tastes great! Beat 2 eggs for 3 minutes on high until foamy. Add: 1 cup of sugar and beat again. Add: 1 c. flour + 1 tsp. baking powder; mix. Add: 1/2 cup of scalded milk & 1 tsp vanilla; mix. Bake in a greased and floured pan at 350* until golden brown.
  4. Any pound cake recipe would do you fine for this hun. They are more dense than regular cake recipes and most people who do carved or sculpted cakes use a variation of a pound cake recipe. You can find several here, just click the "recipes" tab and type 'pound cake' into the search box and away ya go. http://www.cakecentral.com
