Will the furnace harm my speaker?

When I got home from work my fiance had the living room rearranged completely. The stereo speaker is now about 2 feet or less away from the furnace. It's a stand up furnace and its facing right at the speaker now and I think it would harm it. (The speaker is about 5 feet tall.) Do you think the heat will cause damage?

  1. I don't know. It might not be a good idea to keep it there with the electrical wiring that's in it...
  2. It could over time I would tell ya to move it
  3. Electrically no, but the excess heat will dry out the cone and possibly make it brittle. Vibrations from the speaker itself could crack or destroy the coil or cone,
  4. It's a bad idea to keep any electronics near a heat source to begin with but if it's two feet away and the furnace it blowing heat on it I would suggest moving it elsewhere. Personally I'd rather not take a chance on damaging the cone and killing the sound quality.
  5. I think so. My heater is about the same distance from my 5 foot speaker, but the heater is not facing the speaker, so it doesn't hurt it. But, facing it probably will.
  6. Rob C. gave you the right answer.
  7. If the speakers/speaker box is pretty hot to the touch (like you *wink, wink*), then I would move it away another bit from the furnace. If it's just warm and you can place your hand on it for a long time, then it should be OK. Most speaker wire is made to withstand some heat, as the speakers normally heat up due to their constant vibrating. Hope this helps... Good luck!
  8. Turn the furnace on and have your fiance stand 2 feet away from it, if he feels uncomfortably warm over time...move the speaker. (You can leave him there if you want.)
  9. NO it will not unless it is balsting towards the speaker. Heat will destroy the internal components of the sound system though so make sure the AC is running.
  10. Home theater speakers aren't made for high temperatures. If the air flow and heat of the furnace goes directly on the cone it will dry out the cone. Depending on how high the temperature is the effect could happen more quickly. I would move it if it was an expensive item. Drying this cone out will make your speakers sound less punchy and the bass will definitely be affected and probably make them crumble over time.
  11. Two feet away should be plenty of room. I know this is the summer time and you don't use your furnace now, but when you start to use it, just see out much heat it puts out. If it is very much, I would move the speaker, if the outside of the speaker gets hot.
  12. Yes, and I think you should move the furnace to somewhere farther away from anything - like at least 4 feet away from anything.
  13. definately, move the speaker before cold weather comes, or you'll forget
  14. It could possibly dry out the speaker cone. It would be better to have it in another place.
