How does the car radio displays the name of the station?

I have seen car radios displaying the radio name that´s tuned and the song they´re playing, like a winamp reading the id tag, but how does the radio sends that info, and how does the car radio reads it? And why my mp3 player with fm tuner doesn´t displays it?

  1. FM Radio now has extra signals sent along with it on the RDS (Radio Data System). If your car has RDS circuitry, and the station sends this signal, it will show up on the display. Your MP3 won't send this signal, so the radio won't show it. However, with MP3s, you can search the internet for additional info (like the Windows Player does), and print this out.
  2. It displays through a LCD panel. lol.......... Electro - fogey is correct dear.
