How do I put a car on four Jack Stands safely in fairly limited space?

I have a 1975 camaro that i'm working on. Though a mechenical novice, I'm now to the point where I need to put it on four stands to replace suspension, brakes, wheels and remove engine for rebuild. My concern is that once I place the stands under the front end when jack up the rear some how the front will tip off the stands causing damage to my garage and realations with my wife.I have many manuals so I'm familiar with the proper points to place jack and jack stands. But on this particular subject their all vague at best, its either front up or rear up never all four with clear intructions.

  1. When a vehicle is being jacked up, it moves along an ark. If you've got a rolling floor jack, that should compensate for forward movement. Remember to make sure the e-brake is off and the transmission is in neutral while you raise and lower the car. I would recommend putting the jack stands under a sturdy piece of frame behind the front fenders and in front of the rear fenders.
  2. jack 1 tire up than put a stand under it then go diagonal from that tire and repeat
  3. Just do it carefully and dont jack it up to much when your doing the other end. And leave a jack under it as a safety precaution and maybe the wheels and tires under it just in case you didnt put on good jack points. You sound like you know whats going on just be careful.
  4. Simply place the jack stands in the corrosponding jack locations under the car. When you jack the car up after one end is placed on jackstands the car will not tilt off the stands. Your jack should have wheels on it to allow it to adjust as it lifts your vehicle. This prevents the car from being pushed/pulled as it is lifted and falling off the jack stands.
  5. I'm no expert but, I've done this 100's of times. Put the rear up first. If the stands are under the axel housings it will pivot on the housing.
  6. my advice would be to use a jack to jack up the front and once you have it at the level you want it i would put like 4x4s or railroad ties under the subframe so that you know nothing will give out. Then go to the rear and do the same. Always do safety FIRST.
