What are the most important art shows/contests in the world for contemporary artists?

The type of art shows I am referring to referring to would include still lifes, portraits, figure paintings, interiors, and landscapes in a classical realism style.

1. In order to get to the big leagues, you have to start with some regional shows. www.artshow.com www.artdeadlines.com list all kinds of contests. Make sure you have really really good slides of your work. If your slides are crappy or mediocre, you won't get in to many shows and you'll be wasting those entry fees.
2. Portraits .... Archibald Prize, that's for aussies and must be portrait of a famous person whether be film, music, politics, science whatever
