I need to select fish and filters for a 55 gallon aquarium?
I won a 55 gallon aquarium and stand and don't know what to fill it with. I've had smaller freshwater aquariums with various goldfish and guppies. I even had a couple of Piranhas. I like the color and beauty of saltwater fish but don't like all the upkeep required to the tank. Are sharks hard to take care of and what kind of fish can be with them? Do I need a fluval style canister for a 55? If I get one, do I still need a bio wheel?

- motoro stingray or any stingray for that matter..tho you would only be able to keep one or two( then you can keep lots of little gold fish...for a while,as food) and at least a 304 fluval tho bigger is better. cichlids are exellent too....
- As far as fish get African Chichlids, saltwater beauty without the hassle. They are brackish water fish and very easy to maintain. I recommend getting big lava rocks from your local garden store, or Lowe's and drilling your own holes in them. I spent about $11 USD for rocks that would of cost me that for one small rock from a fish store, just remember to rinse them off. You won't need both a fluval canister and a bio wheel. I chose a Penguin Bio Wheel because they are a lot easier and cheaper to maintain than a fluval. I had Taginika and Malaway (sp?). and it was an absolutely beautiful 55 gallon.
- a 55gal is to small for any type of saltwater shark. a fluval 305 would work very well on a 55gal tank. and why not try some cichlids there 1000's of types and colors and there very easy to keep
- For the filter you don't need the bio wheel. Cichlids are the best replacement of saltwater fish. Some are very beautiful. Some good cichlids would be electric yellow cichlid, frontosa, blood parrot, angelfish, and a severum would look nice. Or you could keep an oscar. A good african cichlid tank would be: 6 electric yellow cichlids 4 electric blue cichlids and some other mbunas
- hi, i just got rid of my 50 gallon aquarium. their was a sudden leak HUGE DISASTER! ugh, anyways a had it for about 4-6 years and 90% of the time i just got goldfish for it and feeder fish. it all depends on how much your willing to spend also. I found feeder fish the best because they lasted typically 1-3 years and grew to be fairly large they were great! The only bad thing i found about most other fish ESPECIALLY TROPICAL FISH was they were very problematic when it came time to cleaning the tank. over half of them died each time. When i had goldfish and feeder fish they were great for everythings and really lit up the tank!!
- DONT GET A STINGRAY that person is wrong it needs a minimum of 125 gallons to live in but pirranhas i have in mine about six i think they are really cool looking and are just cool to have i mean how many people can say they have pirahnanas
