How many rocks can i put in my aquarium?

I have a Juwel Rio 180 aquarium and stand and i want to add some real rocks from my local fish store but i don't want to add too many rocks incase the glass brakes. Can anyone tell me what weight the glass of this aquarium could hold without breaking. I also have a layer of sand as my substrate. Many Thanks

  1. If you do it right you can fill the aquarium with rocks. I've seen quite a few done this way for African Cichlids. Get some plastic eggcrate from a home improvement store, it's in the lighting section. Put this down first, this eliminates any pressure points from individual rocks. Add your rocks next, and use silicone aquarium sealant to attach them if you plan on stacking. Add your substrate last, adding it last prevents any fish from digging it out from beneath the rocks, which could cause stacked rocks to topple.
  2. 1 gal. of water equals about 7 pounds so I believe you can have a lot of rocks (a 7 pound rock will displace 1 gallon of water , just like if you got into a full bathtub you would displace water) =o_o= .
  3. The glass should be pretty strong seeing that it has a lot of water on top of it, my friend has this tank and has rocks in it. I would get some bog-wood as this is really light and use that along with some carefully placed stones and plants for decoration and hiding places. Better safe than very wet and flooded!
