I went to a butterfly exhibit at the natural history museum today. It was super humid inside to replicate the? replicate the environment of a rainforest. My question is why doesn't the condensation have any effect on their paper thin ( or thinner than paper?) wings? I asked a volunteer who worked there and he acted like a was a moron, he just said' well they are indigenous to the rainforest so the heat and humidity doesn't effect them the same way it does us" okay , but WHY? it would seem it would makes their wings heavy and laden down but it doesn't.
what colors are butterflies attracted to? I'm going to the Milwaukee Public Museum tomorrow, and they have a huge live butterfly exhibit. I wanted the butterflies to not be afraid and come to me, and was wondering what colors of clothes i should wear. Are they also attracted to body sprays like Axe or Tag?
How can you attract butterflies? I am taking my 10 month old baby to the butterfly exhibit at the museum. I have heard of some sort of lotion that can be used to attract butterflies. My son would be SOOO excited to have a butterfly land on him. Any suggestions or tips on attracting butterflies (or at least increasing our chances)?
Niagara Falls Tips - inexpensive places to eat? We are leaving for a week to Niagara Falls and need some ideas of where to eat that don't cost $20 per person each meal.Thanks. Also and fun things to do in the winter time? We have already taken the kids to the Bird and butterfly exhibits.
Threadfin butterfly, ich, or something else? My threadfin butterfly has white spots at the very tip of his tail, and top of his fin only. He is eating normally, and is not exhibiting an unusual behavior. I started running a UV sterilizer last night. I can't decide if I should setup a hospital tank (I have inverts, so can't treat for ich in the main tank). Is this ich, or possibly something else? How long can I 'wait and see'?
Where did Damien Hirst get the butterflies? I'm doing a presentation on Damien Hirst for my Art Appreciation class and I can't find anywhere on the internet that tells where Damien Hirst got the butterflies for his exhibit titled, Superstition. Did he harvest them himself then kill them and use them for the pieces or did he get a load of dead butterflies from somewhere? Don't worry, as soon as I can get to the library I'm checking there too! Your help is appreciated!
Mackinaw Island attractions? I was told to see the butterfly exhibit when I go, but I just found out there are two of them, the Original Butterfly House and the Wings of Mackinac-Butterfly Conservatory. Can anyone tell me which one is the better of the two?

too young? I'm 13 and there's a boy in my class that i'm totally infatuated with. I've been friends with him for about a year. Whenever I'm around him I'm just happy and love making him laugh. Whenever I have a conversation with him my ears get hot and my stomach is like the butterfly exhibit at the LA Natural History Museum. I love everything about him and we have a lot in common (that's why i was friends with him to begin with). we're best friends but feeling this way around him drives me insane. the thing is he likes one of my best friends (although recently she's apparently been getting on his nerves, and sometimes tells me she's being really annoying) sometimes we make eye contact and it feels like hes trying to tell me something but then we continue normal conversation. i could never bring myself to tell my parents, they'll jsut say "ohh thats so cute!" but i truly think i love him--i need some opinions? how can i tell if he likes me?
How do you like my story? This is one that just came to me. I'm 11, so nothing too critical. It's fiction, and i let my mind flow with that :). I walk down the stairs; another horrible day of school, just when i remembered i had a feild trip. Wonderful. I rush to pack up my lunch, and i swing out of the door without saying goodbye. Was that a big mistake. When I was touring the butterfly exhibit, my teacher called me over. She said with a sigh "Your father called. He is coming to pick you up." I'll be straight out with this. My father is an alchoholic. I worry for him, but at the same time i hate him. 10 minutes past. 20. 30. It became two hours and i started to worry. My teacher was staring at me too with a concerned look. A cop had confronted her. They were talking about my dad; i swore i heard his name. Had he gotten a DUI? I couldn't afford to ask relatives for money again. My mind started racing, and i couldn't focus at all. My teacher pointed over at me, and the cop strut my way. I couldn't take this, it was too painful. So i did the only thing i'm good at, i ran. Hours past as i hid in the storage closet. Right when i couln't take the strong odor anymore, somebody opened the door. It was the cop. My heart raced so fast, i couldn't even breath. The cop came to a soft expression, and he said to me, "Your father was drunk driving. He ran into a car, and was killed."
Can you identify an unusual moth? I saw a moth which lit on a post of my porch in Saint Augustine Florida. It was beautiful and, (for me) unusual and I'd like help identifying it. It was approx. 3 1/2" at the largest span of the wings, which were similiar to one of the Geometroidae, swooping downward and outward to an almost even edge at the bottom with no feathering or scallops of the edges. Coloring was yellow/brownish orange. The head was fuzzy, (hairy) light beige. The abdomen was darker in color with horizontal stripes in a deeper color. There were light beige/yellow patterns on the darker main color, the patterns were one small spot at the head, large half diamonds, (not perfectly even, but elongated toward the bottom of the outer opposite sides of the lower wings, as if the pattern were split and mirrored (two single wings, not four) and two smaller splotches at the inner lowest portion of the wings, where they nearly met evenly, though gracefully curved outward all the way down the vertical length and then inward toward the abdomen across the horizontal bottom, curving up slightly at the inner horizontal edges where they came together. The moth's two front legs were extended beyond the head, they and the antenna were hairy as well. There were other dark patterns, (about the same as the stripes on the abdomen) the most prominent being two spots beneath the light triangular pattern on the abdomen, (upper) and one larger one on each inner side of each light half-diamond pattern. I would greatly appreciate if anyone can identify it, I have lived here my whole life, visited every butterfly/moth exhibit and rainforest and never seen one like it, though some similar. I searched 12 websites and there seem to be no pictures of this moth. I will post a picture as soon as possible, (digital camera was out of charge and I had to take them the old-fashioned way :) so I have to have them developed). I'd really appreciate any info! Thanks, Sugar

women attracted to a man carrying a "strong & silent type" personality -? Some women prefer men who have a "life of the party" or outgoing and chaterbox kind of a personality and that is fine. I am not that kind of guy for I exhibit myself as a classic "strong & silent" confident type of personality which I enjoy. What kind of women would prefer to have a relationship with a guy who exhibits these personality traits of "strong & silent"? Is there a "opposites attract" guideline here where women who are real outgoing or what one might call a "social butterfly" might prefer this, or would women who exhibit similiar personalities find attraction here? I know all women want different things in a man they desire, but what are your thoughts on this question?

Would you add to the Chaos theory? THE CHAOS THEORY In mathematics and physics, chaos theory describes the behavior of certain nonlinear dynamical systems that may exhibit dynamics that are highly sensitive to initial conditions (popularly referred to as the butterfly effect). As a result of this sensitivity, which manifests itself as an exponential growth of perturbations in the initial conditions, the behavior of chaotic systems appears to be random. This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future dynamics are fully defined by their initial conditions, with no random elements involved. This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simply chaos. Chaotic behavior has been observed in the laboratory in a variety of systems including electrical circuits, lasers, oscillating chemical reactions, fluid dynamics, and mechanical and magneto-mechanical devices. Observations of chaotic behavior in nature include the dynamics of satellites in the solar system, the time evolution of the magnetic field of celestial bodies, population growth in ecology, the dynamics of the action potentials in neurons, and molecular vibrations. Everyday examples of chaotic systems include weather and climate. There is some controversy over the existence of chaotic dynamics in the plate tectonics and in economics. Systems that exhibit mathematical chaos are deterministic and thus orderly in some sense; this technical use of the word chaos is at odds with common parlance, which suggests complete disorder. A related field of physics called quantum chaos theory studies systems that follow the laws of quantum mechanics. Recently, another field, called relativistic chaos has emerged to describe systems that follow the laws of general relativity. As well as being orderly in the sense of being deterministic, chaotic systems usually have well defined statistics. For example, the Lorenz system pictured is chaotic, but has a clearly defined structure. Bounded chaos is a useful term for describing models of disorder. Chaos theory is applied in many scientific disciplines: mathematics, biology, computer science, economics, engineering, finance, philosophy, physics, politics, population dynamics, psychology, and robotics

What to do, what to do? A complicated love triangle scenario.? Classic love triangle; please help. Exhibit A: has been with me for nearly 2 years. We're almost the same person, we share the same views/beliefs/etc. I feel like I have a "safer" future with A. Honestly, a few incidences have occurred, however, where I've wanted to break it off. We're best friends, and it seems like we've known each other forever. On the otherhand, it is getting kind of boring. Also, it's hardly a physical relationship, which, I also have mixed feelings about. I am 18, Exhibit A is 20, B is 19. Exhibit B, is new. Exciting. Cute. Less intelligent than Exhibit A, and also a social butterfly. Not as compatible as exhibit A, but we certainly 'clicked'. Also, I don't see it as a long-term relationship either, which is also a negative. Interesting note: Exhibit B has been hinting at it for a while, and is about to come out to be any day now. What would Yahoo! do?

Can someone fix these two Spanish paragraphs? (Language help)? Here I have my poor translation and the original English meaning. If someone could re-do these for me, it would be greatly appreciated! When I was a little girl, we lived in Mexico city, in Mexico. We still live here! My dad took us to many interesting places, like the beach. But, we never went fishing. We also went to Disney World in Florida when I was in third grade. It was a great trip! I had a lot of fun when I was a little girl, I remember helping with more chores back then too! Even though we went on many trips, we played at hope too. Though we didn’t jump rope much, we played volleyball almost every night! Those were good times. Last summer, I traveled to southern Spain. I was there for three months to study Spanish. I travelled by airplane and then by bus. In my suitcase, I took clothing, toothpaste, and books to study with. I studied at the Granada University. I also saw a very pretty art exhibit about very beautiful paintings of butterflies in a museum. I also was a part of La Tomatina in Bunol, that was really fun!
Why did it come out negative if I have so many symptoms? My paternal grandfather had type 1 diabetes, and my maternal aunt has sclederma & hypothyroidsm (all autoimmune diseases). Currently I am 17 and a half. Okay... starting about two years ago I noticed my eyes always had this sandy feeling in them, and I had a redness on my nose and cheeks (resembling a butterfly malar rash). My eyes became EXTREMELY light sensitive (even regular lights bothered them). Two years prior to that, I noticed I was ALWAYS really really tired regardless of how much sleep i got. Also, my fingers & toes became purple and really really cold! Last year, I noticed i would get wrenching joint pains on both sides (symmetrical) of my body. (Shoulders, hips, ankles, wrists, elbows, and ALL 5 fingers!) My weight seems to fluctuate A LOT, and around the time my hand joints first started swelling up, i noticed my thumb nails are pitted horizontally. The arches in my feet are falling. This year, i eliminated gluten and dairy (the doctor told me that i am lactose intollerant), and it made a WORLD of difference! Unfortuantely, I am becoming increasingly more and more chemically sensitive (and seems to be worse when all my symptoms flare up!) Most of the wrenching joint pains in the shoulders and major joints were gone, but I still get joint stiffness and swelling (it is especially bad in the morning). My symptoms seem to occur in cycles (including the joint swelling/stiffness). Everything is SYMMETRICAL & at the site of the swollen joint, sometimes there is a hard substance that feels like a little pea. I exhibit symptoms of carpal tunnel (and the tingling wakes me up at night sometimes). Starting about two years ago, my hair would periodically fall out in clumps, and now my hair seems to be shedding quite a bit. I saw a rheumotologist, and he said it definitley sounded like a connective tissue disorder.Just yesterday, he diagnosed me with Raynauds. I got blood tests done, and he said the lab work was NORMAL (this includes ANAs and stuff like that)! Nonetheless, he said he could repeat everything & to see him immediately if i have the rash again or the joint problems. Yet, i observed some things that said "abnormal" that he said was caused by the blood "sitting around for too long." Are these results associated w/ connective tissue disorders? MCV= HIGH HCH=HIGH RDW=LOW Lymphs (absolute)= LOW Monocytes (absolute)= HIGH Occult blood= 1+ ABNORMAL RBC= 4-10 ABNORMAL Also, why would i exhibit all these symptoms (including Raynauds) and have "normal" blood results!
Does anyone else think there's a link between the decline in smoking and rise in obesity? Smoking suppresses your appetite and weakens your sense of taste. As a result, smokers are generally thinner than nonsmokers. That said, who thinks it's any coincidence that as our nation smokes less our people get fatter? I'm sure there are plenty of other contributing factors, but I think anti-smoking campaigns play a larger role than most people would like to admit. This correlation can be found in reverse, too. Take France for example. They smoke like chimneys and are much thinner than Americans. While I know that correlation isn't necessarily causation, it does seem to make sense in this case. I'm not endorsing smoking. I think it is bad for your health and well being. I'm just saying whenever we force another's hand "for their own good," we often unleash a whole slew of negative butterfly effects we didn't foresee. Maybe instead of trying to control others, we should exhibit self-control and let others dig their own graves.
Proof read my Personal Narrative please? The whole convention center went silent, the lights went down and there he was walking towards me. Jason Kennedy the anchor of my favorite TV show E! News. I have looked up to him for years and never thought the day would come when I would get to meet him. Butterflies fluttered around in my stomach, thoughts and questions kept racing through my mind, is this a dream? I had practiced what I would say to him in the incident that I would ever meet him. But I couldn’t get the right words out and my whole body went limp. Is this really happening? After opening my presents Christmas morning it was time to pack for my trip to California with over 200 teens from the Portland area. We would all board a train for a long journey to California; the 30 hours went by like minutes. Meeting new people and getting closer to the people who I’ve known my whole life was well worth the hard earned money I had raised with my best friends so go on this adventure. Lauren, Haylie, and Alison have been my best friends for many years, each of us with completely different personalities, more times than not they clash immensely. Lauren is quiet but knows how to have a good time, Alison is rather bossy and is the leader of the group, and then there is Haylie the rebel, the one who every time her and I get together we somehow manage to get in trouble. I thought Disneyland with my 3 besties would be the best thing in the world, and it was for the first few hours. We all bought matching sweatshirts and princess crowns to wear around. We were quite the pair until we all started arguing about what rides we wanted to go on. Alison and Lauren decided to go together and left me and Haylie in line for the Space Mountain ride. From that moment we all knew how the rest of the week would go. Lauren and Alison would be the angels who showed up to everything on time and Haylie and I would in some way get in trouble. The Anaheim convention center was filled with 8,000 youth from over the world coming together to learn what we could do to help end modern day slavery. You walked into the entry way and could hear the roar of voices. This convention was the main reason we had come to California. As well has the concerts and of course Disneyland was just icing on the cake. The first two days of the convention was filled with fun and exciting hands on learning exhibits. But by the 3rd and final evening of the convention Haylie and I were exhausted. Our leaders were fed up with having to worry about us showing up to things and not sneaking out to hang out with the guys we met. Haylie and I were told to wait in the hotel until the guys from our group came to walk us there. Jamin and Brian came down the elevator and asked if we wanted to go to dinner with them. Haylie would do anything to avoid going to the convention so we went to Ihop which was a mile in the opposite direction. After eating dinner we headed towards to convention center and we realized we each had many calls from our leaders and friends trying to figure out where we were. When we finally arrived we were greeted by our main leaders Matt and Abby who told the boys that they saved them seats. Abby told Haylie and I we had to find our own seats. Extremely angry we left our groups floor seats to look for seat far far away from everyone. We finally found two aisle seats towards the top of the bowl. There was only 3 hours left before New Year’s we sat in our seats and were soon were fast asleep. After about an hour or so we woke up to loud Christian rap music performed by the band Grits. Both Haylie and I strongly dislike rap music. We got up to go get coffee from one of the coffee bars on the lower level of the convention center. As we walked down the stairs we see a man running towards us pushing us in the other direction as we made our way back up the stairs we looked over the rail. A man with light hair he looked to be in his early 30s lying on the ground at an awkward angle. Paramedics were assisting him into a neck brace and then onto a stretcher. As the Police approached us Haylie got nervous. He asked us simple questions about the accident to see if we saw anything. As the investigation came to an end we realized that it was almost time for the New Years after party. We hurried into the Auditorium and stopped at the door, we looked on the big screen to see the gorgeous Jason Kennedy giving away an IPod to another lucky person. We watched the 3 contestants making up little raps to see who the crowd thought did the best. Haylie noticed something that looked familiar My princess bag was on the screen. We made our way towards our seats and there he was standing in the empty place that Haylie and I were once sitting. I quickly turned around and made my way to the nearest door, we stood there with huge grins on our faces I knew he wouldn’t walk through the crowd and that he would make is exit through the back. In my head I rehearsed what I was going to say to him. I

please proof read my paper? Meeting new people and getting closer to the people who I’ve known my whole life was well worth the hard earned money I had raised with my best friends to go on this adventure. Lauren and Alison would be the angels who showed up to everything on time, and that Haylie and I would get in trouble somehow. After eating dinner we headed towards the convention center and we realized we each had many calls from our leaders and friends trying to figure out where we were. When we finally arrived we were greeted by our main leaders Matt and Abby who told the boys that they saved them seats. Abby told Haylie and I that we had to find our own seats. A man with light hair, he looked to be in his early 30s lying on the ground at an awkward angle. Haylie noticed something that looked familiar, my princess bag was on the screen. We made our way towards our seats and there he was standing in the empty place that Haylie and I were once sitting. I quickly turned around and made my way to the nearest door, we stood there with huge grins on our faces I knew he wouldn’t walk through the crowd and that he would make his exit through the back. In my head I rehearsed what I was going to say to him. I want there are paragraphs but i am not sure why they didnt show up i will repost
TRANSLATE TO Spanish please? when i was young, there was an exhibit of insects at the zoo every summer. My family and I always went. There was building just for butterflies, and there were ten kinds of butterrflires flying around. There was also a building that had dozens of insects. I never knew that there were so many insects There was information everywhere. I read that for ever pound of humans, there are twelve pounds of insects. I also learned that Little Miss Mufft really existed. Her father, thomas muffet was an entomologist who gave his daughter mashed spiders when she was sick. This was a common remedy for colds 200 yrs ago
and I don't even know his last name...? Is this normal?? There's this cute farm boy in the 4-H, but he isn't in my club, and I met him for the first time back in May, at a conference. That one time. But since then, I kept thinking about him. I THINK I saw him again today, at the county fair. I'm working there with the 4-H exhibit, and he's there with his livestock. I got the butterflies when I saw him, which means, I have to admit, that I think I'm crushing on him. BUT I'm kind of freaked out at myself, because I barely know him, and I'll barely ever see him normally. I don't even know his last name... Is it normal to develop a crush on someone, even if you barely know them???
10th Anniversary Needs HELP!? Our 10th anniversary is in 2 months & I've been asking my husband what we should do, with no suggestions from him. I suggested we take a trip & he was all "we don't have the money", "what would we do with the dogs for a week?" I suggested a couples massage & he was all "I don't want some stranger rubbing me, and they'll use oil & I'll be greasy. Yuk!" I suggested getting tattoos & said I could get a fairy with 10 butterflies representing our 10 years together. He said "that's good & I can get a ball & chain with 10 links in the chain". That hurt my feelings! Then, finally a suggestion from him - and he was proud of it - he said "we could go see the bodies exhibit at the museum". It's not that I don't want to see it, but I sure don't want to see it for my 10th anniversary. Now my husbands mad at me for not liking his ideas & can't figure out why my feelings are hurt, even though I told him! Am I asking too much or is he just oozing negativity & thoughtlessness? I suggested tattoos because that's what we did for our 4th anniversary (trying to follow "tradition" - and it was his idea then). I suggested going somewhere nice to eat, but he doesn't like steak, italian, mexican, seafood, etc. I suggested a picnic in the park, but he was all "ants & bugs & geese all over, find a spot without poop, etc." I would love a museum, just not disected bodies, and that's all he wants to see. Seeing a cross-section of a brain just isn't going to put me in a lovin' mood. I didn't go this much into detail earlier because there's a character limit.

Twilight...read before you go? www.pluggedinonline.com wilight "I'd never given much thought to how I would die." So begins one of the most resonant love stories to touch teen culture in quite some time. Love, found in a world filled with terrifying monsters in the moonlight. Love, found at a strange high school in a tiny, rainy town that Bella Swan did not want to live in. Love, found by a cold-blooded vampire who didn't think he would ever feel warmth again. Love, found by both of them to be intoxicating to the point of creating near giddy insanity. Bella moves to Forks, Wash., to live with her dad after her divorced mother remarries. She thinks of it as an exile. Certainly she doesn't think anything good will come of it. She's from Phoenix, and she hate the cold and rain. She's a high school junior, so she doesn't relish the idea of starting over at a new school. She's uncertain about her relationship with her dad. But she fits in better than she anticipates. Or at least she thinks she does until she meets Edward Cullen. Butterflies start circling in her stomach the moment she sees him, but all he does is glare at her. It might take a while to smooth out the bumps, but Bella's determined to make it work with her white-faced dreamboat. So determined, it turns out, that even when she learns that he's a bloodsucking vampire, she's unwavering in her newfound infatuation. "You don't scare me," she tells him repeatedly, almost as if she's trying to convince herself along with him. Her resolve is continually tested as she learns that it's all he can do to resist the desire to kill her, as she meets his intimidating family of vampires, and as she becomes the target of a nomadic "tracker" vamp, who's decided she's the endgame of an eternal lifetime. But love is love, she figures, no matter the risk. And therein lies the heart and soul of Twilight—exhibited in both grand and shocking ways. Family is a big part of what nurtures Twilight's love. Edward's coven—family—of vampires is a loving one. Each member is committed to protecting the others, even Bella when she becomes part of them through her relationship with Edward. The Swans, while more fragmented, still show a great deal of cohesion demonstrated through selflessness. Dad opens his arms and home to Bella after years of separation. Uncomfortable at first, Bella tries to give him a fair shake when she arrives. And she does everything in her power to make sure that when her life is threatened, Dad doesn't become collateral damage. Superlatively, Bella willingly offers herself as a sacrifice meant to save her mom's life. She narrates, "Dying in the place of someone I loved seemed like a good way to go." Accepting, for a moment, the idea that vampires can exist in a fantasy world and that they are capable of making "moral" choices within the framework of their predetermined natures, it would be fair to say that the Cullen clan's choice to avoid killing humans is ... positive. Edward explains to Bella that they are "vegetarians," meaning that they have learned to survive on the blood of animals. Beyond being grateful that she's not going to be devoured mere moments after falling in love for the first time in her life, Bella interprets this as them being "good" vampires who have struggled, some for centuries, to renounce their evil inclinations. So within the context of a monster mash such as this, we can see a reflection of the Christian calling to put away the old man of sin and embrace the new one—a path that while straight and narrow, is certainly more difficult to walk. Edward and Bella don't talk about it much, but it is intimated that despite their ability to choose good over evil, Edward considers himself and all other vampires to be eternally damned, and he resists mightily the idea of allowing Bella to descend into the abyss that he finds himself submerged in. She doesn't care a whit about that. She's eager to become a "cold one" if only it means she will be with her beau forever. Edward can read minds. His sister, Alice, sees visions of the future. Clearly tempted to go farther, Edward wrenches himself away from Bella after they begin kissing. (Before he does so, they embrace, eagerly lock lips and slowly lower themselves onto her bed.) There's a pro-abstinence message in his decision to disengage, but it's muddied by a couple of facts: 1) He's avoiding sexual contact because he knows it will cause him to want to kill her, not because he believes the contact itself would be immoral in any way. 2) He says he's been in the habit of sneaking into her window at night and watching her sleep. And once he admits that to her—and she doesn't run screaming, calling him a creepy stalker—he proceeds to spend the night with her in her bed (clothed, but cuddling). Dialogue dips into the sexual arena when Edward tells Bella what people at a restaurant are thinking about. He grins, looking around the room and saying, "Money, sex, money, sex, read whole review.... good/bad at www.pluggedinonline.com
Biology help. Evolution? 1. After which event could you say with most certainty that evolution has occurred? (Points: 3) An allele frequency changes in a population. An animal does not grow to its potential. A green-eyed fly is born into a population of brown-eyed flies. A new predator comes into an environment. 2. In which scenario could natural selection most obviously occur? (Points: 3) an island with lizards that all look alike and are all eating the same food a population of salmon with different skin colors that are involved in attracting mates all insects in a certain desert that have the same adaptation for saving water a population of parakeets that have the same size beak 3. Which group of organisms can be considered a population? (Points: 3) a group of skunks living in the same forest all buffaloes in North America different kinds of butterflies living in the same patch of rain forest freshwater salmon 4. A population of white-tailed deer inhabits a certain patch of forest in Michigan. Which group of alleles can be considered the gene pool of those deer? (Points: 3) the dominant alleles of all white-tailed deer the dominant alleles of the white-tailed deer in this population only the alleles of all white-tailed deer the alleles of the white-tailed deer in this population only 6. Which sentence best represents the process through which evolution occurs? (Points: 3) Mutations lead to disease. Organisms that are fit survive and reproduce. Allele frequencies do not change. Organisms always exhibit dominant genes. 7. Natural selection acts on the variation in populations of living things, usually through a specific trait. Which statement must be true about that trait? (Points: 3) The trait is the same for all organisms. All forms of the trait have the same impact on survival. The trait is resistant to mutations. The trait is passed on genetically to the next generation. 8. A population of snails is experiencing disruptive selection in terms of their shell patterns. Which statement is most likely true about the population? (Points: 3) Two different shell patterns are combining into one very common pattern. Snails with the most common shell pattern are surviving in greater numbers than snails with all other shell patterns. Snails with a new shell pattern are surviving in greater numbers than snails with all other shell patterns. Snails with two different shell patterns are surviving in greater numbers than snails with the most common shell pattern. 9. A family of raccoons living in the center of a forest leaves that area and joins a population of raccoons living near the edge of the forest. Over a period of years, a certain trait in the raccoon population living near the edge of the forest becomes more common. What factor caused the raccoon population to evolve? (Points: 3) migration genetic drift mutation genetic recombination 10. A bird's wing, a dolphin's fin, and a cat's paw are homologous structures. How do those structures support the theory of evolution? (Points: 3) They prove that the limbs of all land animals evolved from wings and fins. They all have similar sizes and functions. They are evidence that the animals had a common ancestor. They are good examples of vestigial structures. 11. How does comparing the embryos of different organisms support the theory of evolution? (Points: 3) The embryos of any group of living things resemble the other embryos in that group. The embryos of all organisms are identical. The stages of development of the embryos of certain organisms are extremely similar, a fact that suggests the organisms had common ancestors. 12. Which sentence best describes vestigial structures? (Points: 3) They may have had an important function in the past. They are necessary for an organism's survival. All animals have them. They contain genetic mutations. 13. Fossil evidence suggests that whales evolved from land mammals. Using comparative DNA techniques, scientists have also suggested that whales are related to hippos. How could comparing amino acid sequences support the theory of evolution? (Points: 3) Comparing amino acid sequences showed that stabilizing selection took place in a population of hippos, resulting in the formation of a new species of whale. By comparing amino acid sequences, scientists were able to prove that ancient whales had the same DNA base pairs as ancient hippos. Comparing amino acid sequences can show close genetic relationships between organisms that may appear very different, such as whales and hippos.
Could my boyfriend have Asperger's? To make a long story as short as I can, I graduated this spring with my BA in psych and currently work as a TSS (therapeutic support staff). With my newest kiddo (who is diagnosed with Asperger's) I commented to my supervisor about how he repeated himself quite often, and she said that he was displaying echolalia.I should have realized this, but still being new to the mental health field I wasn't putting it all together yet. That evening, I was with my boyfriend (who is 21 and has never been diagnosed with anything) and his friend. My boyfriend did something that he often does but I had never really put much thought into before. After saying something funny, he repeated himself. A switch went off in my brain. He does this quite often, but it's usually only after he says something funny and he's laughing about it. When he does say something funny, he probably repeats himself about 90% of the time. We've been dating for almost 2 years now, and he has done this consistently. I asked him about it once, and he said he never even realized he did it. In addition, my boyfriend's 15 year old brother does this as well. When he does it however, it's sometimes after any little thing he says and he says it very quietly, or even just mouths the words. I'm not certain how frequently he does this. I was trying to do some research on what else echolalia (or palilia?) could be a symptom of, but everything leads back to Asperger's. As far as exhibiting other symptoms, my boyfriend and his brother both have difficulty controlling their emotions (especially anger and depression). For the most part, they are both empathetic to others and have had little trouble making friends, but neither of them are exactly social butterflies. My boyfriend does get very awkward around people he doesn't know if they try to talk to him. However, he always knows the very second I am upset about something. Still, a part of me has always felt that there was something slightly...off about him, which I always attributed to his alcoholic and potentially abusive father, but who knows. In addition, I also recently came to the conclusion (again, just putting everything together) that his 7 year old sister suffers from trauma from their parents violent (not physically) fighting from her tantrums in the middle of the night and her notes around the house of "No Fighting Allowed." Can someone tell me what they think? Could he have been undiagnosed with a very high functioning form of Asperger's? Is his echolalia just a weird habit? Or could it be something else? Thank you!!! See I thought it was something like needing reassurance that it was funny, or he thinks it's so funny he says it twice because he likes it (??? I don't know). It's not even like he's telling a joke or anything, but just making a comment and laughing about it. I can't think of anything specific...but like if he messed something up and we were laughing about it he would say "Well, guess I better try again....(softer) better try again." while he's laughing. I know it's kind of confusing but if you know what echolalia and palilia are then you'll get it lol Also, he would be extremely offended if I told him I think he might have Asperger's or that his "echolalia" is a symptom of a developmental disorder, so I'd like to at least be able to have some good evidence before bringing the idea up to him.
What women are attracted to a man with a "strong & silent" type personality? Some women prefer men who have a "life of the party" or outgoing and chaterbox kind of a personality and that is fine. I am not that kind of guy for I exhibit myself as a classic "strong & silent" confident type of personality which I enjoy. What kind of women would prefer to have a relationship with a guy who exhibits these personality traits of "strong & silent"? Is there a "opposites attract" guideline here where women who are real outgoing and social butterflies might prefer this, or would women who exhibit similiar personalities find attraction here? I know all women want different things in a man they desire, but what are your thoughts on this question?

The Argument for Design? What kind of rubbish is that? "There are many arguments advanced by Christians that attempt to infer a God's existence by the alleged evidences of intelligent design in nature. All are deeply flawed in that they commit the fallacy of first presupposing design in order to prove a designer, putting the cart before the horse. One of the most popular of these is the watchmaker argument, first advanced by theologian William Paley in 1802. Basically it goes like this. If you're walking through the forest/along a beach/wherever, and you see a watch lying on the ground, you could pick it up and tell just by looking at it that the watch could not have just materialized there out of nothingness for no reason at all. Clearly this is a highly intricate piece of machinery, deliberately created and manufactured for a purpose. From here, the argument points out that since organisms in nature exhibit just as much complexity in their makeup as this watch, it is reasonable to assume that nature is the work of deliberate design too. And this is the first and most obvious problem with the watchmaker argument: it is nothing more than an assumption, based upon an appearance of order. The appearance of order in nature is not alone sufficient justification for assuming that this order is the result of purposeful, intelligent design by a supernatural - trees providing oxygen etc.- but most of the sciences have shown us that there are practical, mechanistic explanations for how and why things work in nature the way they do. In order to mount a convincing argument that things in nature require a Divine Creator to explain them, Christians must first demonstrate that it is impossible to explain them in any other way, and such design arguments as the watchmaker argument fail to do this. Viewed another way, the structure of the watchmaker argument is self-refuting. The hypothetical person noticing the hypothetical watch on the hypothetical beach thinks it looks designed...but compared to what? In order for one to recognize design, one must have a concept of non-design as a frame of reference to work from. So if the watch looks designed compared to its natural surroundings, then that clearly implies those natural surroundings were not, in fact, designed, though they may exhibit the appearance of order. Even if one were, for the sake of discussion, to take the watchmaker argument seriously, it would still not be a strong argument that the designer inferred by the comparison of watch-to-nature bears any resemblance to the Christian God. For one thing, no watch is made by one man these days; they are usually made by factories employing thousands of workers. And the factories that make watches are not the same factories that make chairs, styrofoam cups, computers, or Winnebagos. So why assume that nature, with all its dazzling variety, must be the work of only one designer? At best, the watchmaker argument can be said to be an argument for polytheism, or a highly clever and advanced race of aliens who have figured out how to make solar systems and planets. Still another refutation along these lines is that watches do evolve. The modern digital watch was not dreamed up in every detail by anyone in the modern day. It evolved from older watches, which evolved from analog watches, which evolved from hourglasses, sundials and other time-keeping methods. Each step in the "evolution" of the watch was achieved by people thinking about older designs and coming up with new ways to improve them. So if the analogy is going to work, it's going to have to allow at minimum for God experimenting and modifying his design through an evolutionary process and selection. This is important when you consider that many creationists try to use this argument to refute evolution. Finally, it can be pointed out that Christians who argue from design take a highly selective view of nature. One woman who called The Atheist Experience some months ago couldn't understand why we weren't convinced of God's existence because of "all the beauty" in nature. We pointed out that while things like butterflies, waterfalls, and sunsets were indeed beautiful, other things like earthquakes, cancer and the Ebola virus were not. "Beauty" is a human concept that individuals apply subjectively to things we observe. One must wonder why the loving God of Christianity would consider it "beautiful" to set nature up so that animals in the wild had to massacre one another to survive. Surely God would not take pleasure in the death agonies of a gazelle having its throat torn away by a ravenous cheetah...would He? If God is such an "intelligent designer," why couldn't He have created "meat trees," so that the carnivores could pluck their meals every night and leave the gentle herbivores alone? Do we know with absolute certainty that the universe is not the result of deliberate design? Well, no. But any sort of objective view of nature must lead one to conclude that the s pecific design arguments of Christianity are invalid, as it makes no sense their supposedly omnibenevolent God would design a nature so harsh and cruel. citation: http://www.atheist-community.org/faq/#watchmaker

can anyone analyze this story and answer the questions? =================STORY=================== Magnificence by ESTRELLA D. ALFON There was nothing to fear, for the man was always so gentle, so kind. At night when the little girl and her brother were bathed in the light of the big shaded bulb that hung over the big study table in the downstairs hall, the man would knock gently on the door, and come in. he would stand for a while just beyond the pool of light, his feet in the circle of illumination, the rest of him in shadow. The little girl and her brother would look up at him where they sat at the big table, their eyes bright in the bright light, and watch him come fully into the light, but his voice soft, his manner slow. He would smell very faintly of sweat and pomade, but the children didn’t mind although they did notice, for they waited for him every evening as they sat at their lessons like this. He’d throw his visored cap on the table, and it would fall down with a soft plop, then he’d nod his head to say one was right, or shake it to say one was wrong. It was not always that he came. They could remember perhaps two weeks when he remarked to their mother that he had never seen two children looking so smart. The praise had made their mother look over them as they stood around listening to the goings-on at the meeting of the neighborhood association, of which their mother was president. Two children, one a girl of seven, and a boy of eight. They were both very tall for their age, and their legs were the long gangly legs of fine spirited colts. Their mother saw them with eyes that held pride, and then to partly gloss over the maternal gloating she exhibited, she said to the man, in answer to his praise, But their homework. They’re so lazy with them. And the man said, I have nothing to do in the evenings, let me help them. Mother nodded her head and said, if you want to bother yourself. And the thing rested there, and the man came in the evenings therefore, and he helped solve fractions for the boy, and write correct phrases in language for the little girl. In those days, the rage was for pencils. School children always have rages going at one time or another. Sometimes for paper butterflies that are held on sticks, and whirr in the wind. The Japanese bazaars promoted a rage for those. Sometimes it is for little lead toys found in the folded waffles that Japanese confection-makers had such light hands with. At this particular time, it was for pencils. Pencils big but light in circumference not smaller than a man’s thumb. They were unwieldy in a child’s hands, but in all schools then, where Japanese bazaars clustered there were all colors of these pencils selling for very low, but unattainable to a child budgeted at a baon of a centavo a day. They were all of five centavos each, and one pencil was not at all what one had ambitions for. In rages, one kept a collection. Four or five pencils, of different colors, to tie with strings near the eraser end, to dangle from one’s book-basket, to arouse the envy of the other children who probably possessed less. Add to the man’s gentleness and his kindness in knowing a child’s desires, his promise that he would give each of them not one pencil but two. And for the little girl who he said was very bright and deserved more, ho would get the biggest pencil he could find. One evening he did bring them. The evenings of waiting had made them look forward to this final giving, and when they got the pencils they whooped with joy. The little boy had tow pencils, one green, one blue. And the little girl had three pencils, two of the same circumference as the little boy’s but colored red and yellow. And the third pencil, a jumbo size pencil really, was white, and had been sharpened, and the little girl jumped up and down, and shouted with glee. Until their mother called from down the stairs. What are you shouting about? And they told her, shouting gladly, Vicente, for that was his name. Vicente had brought the pencils he had promised them. Thank him, their mother called. The little boy smiled and said, Thank you. And the little girl smiled, and said, Thank you, too. But the man said, Are you not going to kiss me for those pencils? They both came forward, the little girl and the little boy, and they both made to kiss him but Vicente slapped the boy smartly on his lean hips, and said, Boys do not kiss boys. And the little boy laughed and scampered away, and then ran back and kissed him anyway. The little girl went up to the man shyly, put her arms about his neck as he crouched to receive her embrace, and kissed him on the cheeks. The man’s arms tightened suddenly about the little girl until the little girl squirmed out of his arms, and laughed a little breathlessly, disturbed but innocent, looking at the man with a smiling little question of puzzlement. The next evening, he came around again. All through that day, they had been very proud in school showing off their brand new pencils. All the little girl
